that was what i was thinking , overcharge can be more devestating , i see the point on the smaller bullet in the same parent cartrige , i had occassion to see a fellow try to chamber and shoot a 308...

The various cartridges mentioned were developed in a time of rapid changes in gun and ammunition design. One could say that the end product was the 38 S&W Special which made the earlier cartridges...

I am more of the belief that the reduction was to ease the stress on the firearm itself. Forty grains did not add that much velocity, and put a strain on the older designed guns with their metallurgy....
